Rule of thirds
To quote one of my all time favorite photographers Rick Sammons “Dead center is deadly”. You may be asking what does “dead center is deadly” mean. Well I am glad you asked. If you were to divide your viewfinder up into a grid just like a tic-tac-toe board. The center square is where you don’t want the subject (there are exceptions to this rule, and I will get to that in another post.) You want to offset the important compositional elements along these lines or their intersections (as shown below). It is believed that by aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject. The proper photography term is ” The Rule of Thirds” and is the rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design.
